Thiruvarangam(Srirangam)

Updated: Oct 14, 2020

This is my version of 'Ranganathar' sketched in the Kalamkari style, using black pen and with watercolor wash. Here, I have used Sennelier Watercolors on Chitrapat paper.

Here, I have depicted the main deity of the Srirangam temple, Ranganathar also known as the Periya Perumal, who is in the reclining pose on the five-headed Adi-Seshan serpent. The goddess is known as Ranganayaki. This temple, loacted in Trichy, is a "Swayam Vyakti Kshetram" or Self-Manifested.

Originally, the idol was there in Ayodhya installed by the King Ikshvaku and was worshipped till later Sri Rama had gifted this idol to Vibheeshana. On his way to Lanka, he placed the idol near river Kaveri. The lord in the temple is hence, seen facing South, towards Lanka.

Swamy Vedanta Desikan, one of the most brilliant poet, philosopher, has composed 1,008 verses describing the holy Paduka or sandals of Lord Ranganathar called the Paduka Sahasram. He had completed this in a span of three hours.
